Have you heard about the GDPR? It stands for The General Data Protection Regulation, which is designed to enable individuals to better control their personal data. It is hoped that these modernised and unified rules will allow businesses to make the most of the opportunities of the Digital Single Market by reducing regulation and benefiting from reinforced consumer trust. Right now, it only affects the rights of EU residents. Whew, to all of our US companies, right?
That’s a big nope. Sure, you might not sell things to the EU, or think that you work with anyone from the EU, but keep in mind that the regulations are for EU residents, whether they’re currently residing in the EU or not. Also, your website has a spot where people can sign up for your newsletter, right? Who’s stopping someone from the EU from signing up?
Using MailChimp for your sign-up form? They’ve provided awesome resources to help you collect the required consent. Please keep in mind that just enabling GDPR fields on your signup forms will not make you compliant. It’s the first part of a multi-step process. Need help with the process?
