Our Day Out on the Town: Four of Green Bag’s Favorite Things in Charleston

GBD blog photo (5)

Our namesake Green Bag doesn’t just hang out on its hook in the office. This bag travels all over Charleston and beyond! Whether we’re taking work outside for a brainstorming session on Folly Beach, grabbing lunch at our neighborhood salad spot, or networking with other Charleston entrepreneurs—all of us at Green Bag Designs like to enjoy our city.

There are plenty of amazing reasons why Charleston keeps winning Best City to Visit accolades. Yes, this is a tourist hotspot, and we love it!

Whether you’re visiting the Holy City for a wedding, bachelorette party, wintertime getaway or art festival like Piccolo Spoleto, we highly recommend that you check out these destinations for shopping, drinking, eating, and playing. If you have a favorite spot to share, drop it in the comments. We’d love to hear yours, too!)

Shopping at Fourteen & East

We love this home decor, design and gift shop that’s right around the corner from our office at The Schoolhouse in Avondale. Jenna, the owner, is a crafting maven and full time wedding photographer who curates this adorable shop. You’ll find everything from oyster shell cufflinks to witty bar trays, and it hosts workshops like calligraphy and brush lettering if you want to hone your DIY skills too!

Barbecue at Lewis Barbecue

It wouldn’t be the South without the crackling skin on a perfectly-smoked brisket. There are many amazing Barbecue spots in town, including Swig & Swine right down the street from us in West Ashley. Picking a favorite is like choosing between idyllic vacation spots. But…Texan Chef John Lewis, the pitmaster behind Lewis Barbecue’s popular 18-hour ribs, really nailed it with this spot. It’s been featured on Eater, Garden & Gun, CNN and CBS News. Any day is a good day for brisket, but go on a Saturday, the only day they serve up their devilishly smoky beef short ribs.

Tacos and Sunshine on Folly Beach

photo from BLU Restaurant & Bar

Every once in a while, we like to drink margaritas while we talk shop. And one of our favorite places to do this is on Folly Beach, at Taco Boy and BLU to be precise. Taco boy has enough diverse options for tacos and cocktails to please everyone on our team, from skinny pineapple margaritas and vegetarian tacos to the fully loaded nachos. From there, we head to BLU, the oceanfront bar and restaurant inside the Tidel hotel. On summertime evenings, they host live entertainments and movies.

Quick, healthy lunches at Verde

photo from Verde

On any given day you’ll find us—and probably half of the people working at The Schoolhouse offices—taking a quick break to grab a salad at Verde. This salad and wrap spot makes it easy to eat fresh, healthy and local lunches. Another reason we love it? The company was started by another female entrepreneur, co-owner Jennifer Ferrebee, and even as it’s grown, Verde has stayed locally-staffed and donates time and food to local community organizations.
